Spravedlivost: justice, fairness, truth

Representatives of the authorities, victims of abuse and staff at Spravedlivost, a non-governmental organization based in Jalal-Abad in southern Kyrgyzstan, spoke to Michelle Pirotta, Communications and Editorial Assistant, OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities, about the situation in Jalal-Abad four years after the events of June 2010. These are excerpts from the interviews.

  • "It is an issue of dignity, not ethnicity"
    Spravedlivost has been promoting human rights in Jalal-Abad since 1994. Since the 2010 events, discrimination against ethnic minorities, especially Uzbeks, has become widespread. It won the 2014 Max van der Stoel Award for its work to protect minorities and promote human rights.

  • "The only thing I can do is speak out"
    This story is based on interviews with victims of discrimination in Jalal-Abad. Despite the danger, they shared their stories in the hope that by speaking out against abuse, they will improve their situation.

  • "This year, Spravedlivost submitted 18 complaints regarding torture"
    Spravedlivost is respected among the authorities for promoting human rights and providing legal aid to some of the most vulnerable groups in Jalal-Abad. It has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a network of human rights organizations and the authorities to monitor temporary detention facilities in the Jalal-Abad Region.
